HIDDEN TUNNELS

The opening credits in Jordan Peele's mysterious and socially provocative horror film Us informs viewers of the countless miles of hidden tunnels stretching beneath the United States. Seemingly abandoned, these tunnels house a deep, dark secret…

As the story progresses, we see the Wilson family confronted with four figures standing in their driveway. They soon discover that the four figures are terrifying and uncanny opponents.

Us is now available to own on DVD and Blu-ray now and to celebrate we take a look at some of the world's creepiest hidden tunnel networks.

BLUE GHOST TUNNEL
Located in Ontario, Canada, the Blue Ghost Tunnel was discovered by a ghost hunter who claims he saw an ectoplasmic blue mist inside. There are varying theories behind this mysterious mist; one claim is that a nearby cemetery suffered severe flooding, and bodies had to be pulled from the ground, while another blames the demise of a rail engineer who got stuck in a boiler underground and perished.

HELLFIRE CAVES
West Wycombe is home to a small network of caves stretching a quarter of a mile underground. Developed in the 1700s, the tunnels were used exclusively as a meeting place for the Hellfire Club, but the long winding passages are now open to the public. Many visitors claim they have experienced chilling encounters in the caves, including being pelted with stones, drastic changes in temperature and creepy figures lurking in the darkness.

DRAKELOW TUNNELS
In Kidderminster, Worcester, lies a former military complex of tunnels reaching 3.5 miles, situated underneath the quiet English town of Blakeshall. The tunnels were built during the Second World War and used as a secret underground factory for aircraft parts. According to reports, three men were killed during the development of the tunnel, and it was also reportedly built under an ancient graveyard.

STANDEDGE TUNNEL
Located in West Yorkshire, the Standedge Tunnel is regarded as the UK's longest canal tunnel at 3.2 miles. Following the first opening in 1811, locals reported the practice of witchcraft in the tunnel and surrounding areas and uncovered severed sheep's heads buried in the ground. Official reports claimed that the death toll during the development of the tunnel was over 50.

THE SCREAMING TUNNEL
Located in the northwest corner of Niagara Falls, the stories of the screaming tunnel centre around a young girl who once lived nearby who suffered an unfortunate fate. One story is that her house and her clothing caught fire and she ran into the tunnel before she perished, and another is that she was set alight by her raging father. Visitors of the tunnel say they can still hear her screams.
