FRIGHTFEST 2024 PREVIEW: SCARLET BLUE

When the Frightfest team says it scours the globe for new movies, then it's never more evident than when something like Aurélia Mengin's Scarlet Blue pops up.The film's director and writer is an artist, author, filmmaker, and actress from Réunion Island, an overseas department and region of France that sits in the Indian Ocean between Mauritius and Madagascar. In 2018, Mengin's first feature film Fornacis was released on Amazon Prime UK, making her the first woman from the history of the island to make a movie for cinema.

Alter, in her forties, suffers from depression and schizophrenic episodes accompanied by carnal urges. Paranoiac, she feels observed day and night by a presence. Rosy, her loving mother, is her only anchor to reality. Despite their immense love, this mother daughter duo struggles to communicate, each remaining a stranger to the other and feeling misunderstood and lonely.

Insomniac Alter wanders alone every night in search of a comforting encounter. One evening, she stops at a gas station and meets Chris. Nights pass with nocturnal wanderings, thwarted loves, nightmares, and hypnosis sessions.

Alter delves deeper into her past, reconnecting with her breaking point. Her life takes a turn when she discovers that Rosy is hiding a terrifying secret from her...

Mengin says:

As a self-taught Reunionese filmmaker, my journey has been unconventional, drawing strength and creativity from both my island and the contemporary art world, thanks to my father, Vincent Mengin-Lecreulx, an artist who co-founded and established the Contemporary Art Center of La Réunion alongside my mother for 43 years.

As a woman, I have faced numerous challenges in gaining recognition in an industry still largely monopolized by men. But I embrace these challenges and strive to assert my place as a filmmaker, committed to breaking stereotypes and presenting strong and complex female characters in all my films.

Under the axis of fantasy, surrealism, lyricism, and drama, SCARLET BLUE / BLEU ÉCARLATE delves into universal questions: the mother-daughter relationship, the difficulty of rebuilding oneself after experiencing a trauma repressed during early childhood, schizophrenia, hypnosis, the quest for truth and unconditional love, and finally, homosexuality.

I'm so happy that my second feature film SCARLET BLUE will make its UK Première at FrightFest.
